Her heart broke when she heard the diagnosis. The eye doctor told my friend her young son had one dimensional eyesight. In other words everything looked flat to him — he had no depth perception.
As her brain absorbed what she was hearing, her mind raced ahead in time. How will he ever be able to play sports? He won’t be able to see a ball coming at him or swing a bat. How will he ever be able to drive when he turns sixteen? The steering wheel will look one with the dashboard.
Can you imagine a world where you couldn’t see space between objects – where everything looked flat and stuck together?
It’s hard to imagine but that’s exactly the way our spiritual eyes often view our circumstances And unfortunately the way many of us see God.
Maybe it’s because a prayer or prayers have gone unanswered. Or we might feel discouraged because life isn’t turning out like you thought it would or should. You might even be thinking to yourself, did I miss something? Where are you God?
I know. I’ve been there. When we feel this way we are viewing things in one dimensional way.
But just as the doctor told my friend her son’s eyesight could be corrected with exercises, our spiritual eyes can be corrected also. We can go from seeing one dimensional to seeing in 4D!
The answer lies in the shift.
In Abby McDonald’s new book, Shift (Changing our Focus to See the Presence of God), Abby helps us to refocus our vision to see God not just in our good times but in spite of the difficult ones.
When we shift our focus to our unchanging God and away from our ever changing scenery we will start to see Him everywhere. Instead of pining over the not yet we will start to glory in the already done.
During a low place in my own life I gave up on finding answers and started concentrating my efforts on finding God. I wanted nothing more than to know Him better. That’s what desperation will do. So I searched for Him with all my heart. And that’s when I got my first glimpses of Him — God at work in my circumstances. It was there in the in between, the space in the middle of my prayer and the unseen answer where I saw, I felt, I tasted His presence.
Oh the joy and the peace this brought me!
Thankfully you don’t have to be desperate to refocus your eyes to see the living God. Abby explains the process of going from flat vision to 4 D, from black and white to vivid color so well as she seamlessly weaves biblical truth in with personal relatable stories.
If you are one of those people who sometimes wonders, where is God? Has God left the building and left me hanging? If you are then Shift is the book for you!
You can get new eyes to see things you never thought possible with a simple shift of the heart.
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart. I will be found by you, ‘declares the Lord’…” (Jeremiah 29: 13-14a).
