The other day I saw a news report documenting the story of a generous person walking into a Walmart and paying the bill for all the lay-away in the store. This means every person that owes money for merchandise being held is now debt free. They owe no money. They can walk away with their gifts without paying a singe dime. How awesome is that?
As I watched that news clip and the touching scene of surprised and ecstatic customers, jumping up and down and hugging the payer of their bill, I saw a beautiful picture of why we celebrate Christmas.
Our eternal lives have all been put on lay-away. We may want the gift of an eternity in heaven but we can’t afford it. We’ve racked up a debt we cannot pay. A debt of wrongs, a debt of sins.
Our generous God left His world for ours.
He left His infinite for our finite.
He left His high place for our low place.
He left the flawless to help the flawed.
He left His glory for suffering.
He walked into our real-time and paid off our real debt – His life for ours.
And if we choose, we can walk away with the best gift – the gift of forever.
God sent Jesus to be born into our world to redeem us. To take our lives off lay-away.
If you haven’t already, won’t you accept your free gift today? You’re paid in full.
And that’s something to celebrate!
“In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Ephesians 1:7
