Therefore I urge you brothers in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing God—which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 (Emphasis on mercy, mine.)
Those are some heavy words. But simply put they mean, whenever I want to do what in my humanness I want to do, I need to stop and consider Who is living in me and what He has done for me.
When I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord, His Spirit came to permanently indwell in me. I was bought with a hefty price. A brutal death on a cross.
Which means, in God’s mercy He died for me (there’s that word again). I no longer have to die for the punishment of my sin but I do need to sacrifice my human wants (which come from my selfish desires) for the Spirit’s desires.
I have to die to myself.
God considers this daily sacrifice, this communing with Him, spiritual worship.
This can take on many appearances. Mostly I think when the Spirit directs us to do something and we want to go in another direction, dying to self means submitting to the Spirit and instead of to ourselves.
How do we do this if our bent is toward running with the world?
On our own it seems impossible but Paul, the author of Romans goes on to give us a viable solution.
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind “ Romans 12:2
The enticement of the world is the problem. It’s been this way going back in history to the garden of Eden when Satan, in the form of a serpent, enticed Eve to eat what God had forbidden.
So what is meant by the pattern of the world?
Negativity for starters. Watch the news lately?
What other patterns might you see?
Greed, the insatiable need for more (what can more money buy me?), idolatry in every form…IPhones, computers, T.V.,sports, the perfect body, the perfect face, the perfect wardrobe.
Dying to self means dying to whatever we put first in our lives before God.
“Satan who is the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
And may I add has made things very enticing for those who do believe. We shouldn’t want to conform to the pattern of this world if the god of this world is Satan. We have the power living in us to resist by transforming our minds with God’s Word..
It a choice.
Conclusion: We need to put more God into our world and less world into our day.
Making Mondays less mundane with a word from the Word.
Looking forward, pressing on and seeking God.
