Moses might have never grown into the man who would deliver the Israelites from slavery if his mother, Jochebed, had feared man (Pharaoh) more than she trusted God. She defied Pharaoh’s orders putting her own life at risk to protect her son from certain death by Pharaoh’s hand. She didn’t know what the outcome would be but she trusted that God did. Hebrews 11:23. Exodus 2:3
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego defied king Nebuchadnezzar by not bowing down to the golden image the king had set up even though it meant being thrown into fiery furnace. They chose to trust and obey their God instead. Daniel 3: 17-18 says, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us…But even if he does not…we will not serve your gods or bow down to the image of gold you have set up.”
Both Jochebed and the wise young men of Israel (who were being held captive in Babylon) made decisions that put their lives on the line and chose to trust God more than fear what man could do to them.
When I study the lives of these people I’m both humbled and crushed. How many times have I caved so easily when making decisions because I feared what someone might think about me, say to me or do to me? Really? And my life has never been on the line!
But trust negates fear.
Lord, give us the strength today to be a Jochebed, Meshach, Shadrach or an Abednego that we would trust you and Your sovereign will more than we fear what any human coming against us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
