“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)
When most of us think deposit, we think of going to the bank and putting money in. We are even provided with drive through teller services making it easy and painless to put our green stuff where it’s safe and can (hopefully) multiply. We can make deposits into checking and savings accounts, CD’s, money markets, stocks, bonds and mutual funds; a virtual smorgasbord of investment opportunities.
I’m sure you keep track of where you deposit your money but do you keep a close eye on where you are depositing your words? It shouldn’t surprise you to know that most of us have more words to deposit than we have green stuff. Maybe we all should take a closer look at how we are investing our vernacular. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?
Women use approximately 20,000 words a day and men use about 7,000. I was explaining this to my in- laws during their visit a while back. As my mother-in-law and I were talking across the table, my father-in-law leaned in and whispered to my husband, “I think Christy has used up her 20,000 words today (it was still early morning). Okay maybe I use 30,000 words. I’ve always thought of myself as exceptional! My husband just says that I was vaccinated with a phonograph needle. I believe him when he says he’s just teasing….hmmm but on second thought I’m not so sure.
Society says money is power but the bible tells us words have the power to give life or death. (Proverbs 18:21 The Message) How much life have you brought to someone today? Do the math. Do your words add happiness and multiply joy or do they subtract and divide?
So many of us let words just tumble out of our mouths without considering how they will affect those around us. Did you know that it takes at least seven positive comments to overcome just one negative? When you walk away does someone feel better or are they just glad you walked away?
Do you know someone with a smile that lights up a room? Do you have a friend who has culinary expertise? What about that aunt who always seems so put together ? Do you tell them or do you just think it to yourself and figure they already know. What about the plumber or handyman who takes extra care not to track dirt into your house, do you tell him you noticed his efforts?
How does it make you feel when someone affirms the work you do or pays you a compliment, notices you have a special talent and comments you do it well? Feels pretty good doesn’t it? It can make the difference in your day. So often we keep the good stuff to ourselves thinking, ah they already know. Well maybe they knew it yesterday but need to hear it again today. Where you see the opportunity, please leave your deposit.
Affirmation can come in forms other than the spoken word, such as emails, cards, and even old fashioned letters. I have a drawer full of cards and letters sent to me over the years, even emails I’ve printed out. All with uplifting messages from friends and family. If I’m having a difficult day I go back through the drawer and read them all again. Each and every time they put a smile on my face and confidence in my heart.
The message here is very simple. Don’t hoard the good stuff. If you have something nice to say, speak it, write it, send it. Don’t miss out on extending the blessing of encouragement and hope.
